Hartney Greymont Donates Log Benches for the Hilltop Grove

Local tree and lawn specialists, Hartney Greymont of Needham, have generously donated six custom-made log benches for the Glover Outdoor Classroom. The rustic benches, made out of beech, red oak, cherry and other woods, are a beautiful addition to the Hilltop Grove (click here for some pictures). The new bench circle promises to become a favorite area for students to sketch, write poems, read stories, and much more! Thank you to our friends at Hartney Greymont! If you need any kind of tree work done, we heartily recommend that you call them (781.444.1227) —ask for Greg Haston, Certified Arborist, and be sure to mention the Glover benches.

Grove of Quaking Aspens Planted in the Glover Outdoor Classroom

Glover parents and Milton Habitat Stewards have planted a grove of quaking aspen in the Glover Outdoor Classroom. The trees, which are the last major plantings needed to complete the courtyard plan, will provide shade for students as well as habitat for birds. Click here to see some pictures.

Glover Farm Garden Has Plentiful Harvest Over the Summer

During the summer, Glover parents and students harvested a bounty of vegetables from the Farm Garden, including peppers, tomatoes, corn, herbs, and much more. They also were able to watch the sunflowers grow and produce seeds for the birds to eat. Thank you to all Glover families that participated!

Egg-laying Turtle Sighted at Glover

Several classes of Glover students witnessed a turtle laying eggs in the playing field behind Glover. The mother turtle selected a grassy alcove behind the storage unit to dig a hole in which to lay her eggs, cover them with mud and then depart (see the picture of the nest below). Although we don't have a picture of the actual turtle, sharp-eyed students tentatively identified it as Chrysemys picta. or a Painted Turtle. Interested in knowing when those eggs might hatch? Click here to find out.

Help Water and Harvest Crops in the Courtyard Over the Summer!

Did you know that we have herbs, a pizza garden, sunflowers, and more pumpkins growing in the Glover Outdoor Classroom? Glover students have been observing the plantings and learning about them in the last few weeks.

To keep the gardens going over the summer, we need volunteers to water and help harvest the crops. Volunteers can sign up for weekly time slots to tend the crops. Don’t miss this opportunity to get your kids involved in nurturing the plants!! If you’re interested, call Margaret Eberhardt (696-3632, eberhardt_bos@msn.ocm) or Cathy Smith (698-7303, weidmannsmith@hotmail.com). If you’d like to know about harvesting events at the courtyard over the summer, be sure to give them your email address.

Finally, we’d like to thank the parents and Milton Habitat Stewards who have helped spruce up the courtyard over the last few weeks: Yoshi Belash, Margaret Eberhardt, Fleeka Eder, Jennifer Green, Karen Hainline, Gay O’Hanlon, Emma Jean Moulton, Barb Phinney, Cathy Smith, Liz Thill, and Mary Truslow. They worked really hard in the heat to make our courtyard look great!

New Pumpkins

Last fall, we left some of the pumpkins in the Farm Garden in place to see what would happen to them over the winter. The big question was: "Would the seeds from those pumpkins sprout?" The answer is YES!! Go take a peek in the Farm Garden and see if you can spy the pumpkin seedlings (click here to see a picture). A great literature tie-in to this is: Pumpkin Jack (found in the Glover library).

Glover Students Plant Trees on Arbor Day

To celebrate Arbor Day 2005, Glover kindergarten and first grade students planted several native trees in the Glover Outdoor Classroom. They planted pussywillows, swamp azaleas, swamp roses, striped maples, witchhazels, and low bush blueberries. Most of the plants were donated by Glover Outdoor Classroom designer, Ruth Parnall of Learning By the Yard (Conway, MA).  In addition to planting, the students also did a scavenger hunt in the outdoor classroom. Some of their discoveries included a goldfinch, wildflowers, a bird’s egg, and an eastern red cedar tree which provides shelter and berries for birds. After their adventure, Mrs. McCarthy’s kindergarten classes drew what they had seen in the courtyard. To see a few of the childrens pictures, click here.

Mr. and Mrs. Mallard visit the Glover Courtyard

Glover was honored with a visit from a pair of mallards this morning. They were checking out the courtyard to see if it would be a good nesting place. The pair inspected the courtyard in detail, peering in the library door and sniffing at the Farm Garden. Maybe they'll return, so keep an eye out! Click here to see some pictures.

Only 40 Bricks to Go!

We’ve raised over half of the funds needed to complete the patio in the Glover Outdoor Classroom and only need to sell 40 more bricks! This is your last chance to buy a personally-engraved brick or paver that will become part of Glover School forever.

We cannot order the personalized bricks and pavers until we’ve reached our $4,000 goal. We hope to do this in the next couple months and not have to wait until the fall.

There are three ways that you can donate:

  1. Buy an engraved red brick for $75. The 4-inch by 8-inch brick can be engraved with up to 2 lines of text (24 character spaces/line).
  2. Buy an engraved blue stone paver for $150. The 11-inch by 11-inch blue stone paver can be engraved with up to 4 lines of text (26 character spaces/line). Click here for pictures of the bricks.
  3. Contribute a donation for any amount to the patio fund.
If you’d like to see samples, a display is set up in the Glover lobby and photos are available on the Milton Outdoor Classrooms website (under School Projects). Copies of the order forms are also available in the Glover lobby or you can download it as a pdf  file below. If you have questions, contact Janet MacNeil, 617.698.7013, janetmacneil@miltonoutdoorclassrooms.com.
