Student Projects
Dream Courtyard
In the spring 2003 art classes, Mrs. Sampson worked with Glover students to create their dream visions of the courtyard in watercolor. The students came up with some terrific plans and ideas, which were incorporated into the final courtyard design by our landscape architect.
Bird H abitat
One of the main goals of the Glover Outdoor Classroom project is to involve the Glover students. In April 2003, Mrs. Henry and parent volunteers helped us do a bird habitat activity with all classes during library. The activity was designed to get the students thinking about what a habitat is and what we need to put in the courtyard to attract birds. The students also made bird feeders out of soda bottles, and took home a backyard bird habitat activity that they can do at home.
Bulb Planting
During the last two weeks in October, the kids had the opportunity to work in the outdoor classroom (Click here to see pictures of the activity). During his/her library time, the children read about bulbs, observed bulbs under a microscope and planted a bulb in the outdoor classroom. In addition, each classroom teacher received paper white bulbs to grow with the students. Paper whites grow indoors and allow the students to observe first hand how a bulb grows. Planting bulbs with children is a great way to introduce them to the concepts and joys of gardening.
Nature Drawing
During the first week of May 2004 the kids had another opportunity to work in the outdoor classroom. During library time, the students read about flowers, observed flowers under a microscope and with a jeweler’s loop, had a chance to look at the flowers they planted in the fall, and sketched something they observed in the outdoor classroom. They used an interactive web site to learn about the parts of the flower and pollination (www.urbanext.uiuc.edu). Check out photos of the activities here. You can download some cool activities about flowers here.
In May 2004, each grade voted on which type of pumpkin they would plant in the Glover Farm Garden (part of the Outdoor Classroom). Each teacher was provided with a colorful display and information about the pumpkins to help the students make their choices. During the week of June 14th, each class planted their pumpkins and learned about the pumpkin growing cycle by viewing The Pumpkin Circle video. Parent/student teams signed up as Pumpkin Caretakers over the summer to water and take care of our pumpkins. Each student also took home a pumpkin seed to plant and observe over the summer. Click to see pictures of the growing and rotting pumpkins. Also download the Pumpkin Projects Curriculum developed by Glover Outdoor Co-Coordinator, Margaret Eberhardt.
