Water

Easy Ways to Provide Water in Your Backyard Habitat

  1. Buy an inexpensive bird bath
  2. Use a terra cotta pot bottom (makes a great simple bird bath), garbage can lid or other shallow bowl-type container that you have on hand
  3. Create a pond or water feature (Birds are attracted to the sound of dripping or running water.)

Providing Water in Winter

Birds need water in winter when everything is frozen over. To provide them with a source of water, you can purchase a heated bird bath. We recommend the Erva bird bath, available from J.J. Cardinal’s Wild Bird & Nature Store, www.jjcardinal.com, (866) 818-6295. They can be found on the J.J. Cardinal website under “Bird Feeders” then “Accessories.”

Bird Bath Tips

  1. Make sure you empty your bird bath every 2-3 days to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching. (Mosquito larvae take 3-5 days to metamorphose into adults.)
  2. You can also try putting a teaspoon of vegetable oil in the bird bath to prevent mosquitoes from hatching.
  3. Clean your bird bath with a brush and a small amount of mild detergent every so often.
